Biography
Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich was born on October 24, 1966, in Saratov, Russia. He lost his mother when he was just one year old and his father when he was four, leaving him an orphan at a young age. Relatives, including an uncle in Moscow, raised him. He studied at Moscow State Law University and Gubkin University, which is a top school for oil and gas studies—fields that would later be important in his business career. Abramovich is a citizen of Russia, Portugal, and Israel.
Before Fame
Growing up in the Soviet Union, Abramovich came of age during a time of big political and economic changes. Before he got into business, he worked various simple jobs, like selling rubber ducks and reportedly working as a street trader. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 created huge opportunities for those able to navigate the messy shift to a market economy. Abramovich was part of a generation of entrepreneurs who swiftly moved to acquire state assets during Russia's controversial loans-for-shares privatization program of the 1990s, getting ownership stakes in major industries at prices much lower than their market value. His early partnership with Boris Berezovsky was key in gaining access to Sibneft, the oil company that became the foundation of his wealth.
