Salvador Jorge Blanco

Biography

José Salvador Omar Jorge Blanco was born on July 5, 1926, in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. He studied law at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, laying the groundwork for his future in law and politics. After finishing his studies, Jorge Blanco worked as a lawyer and also pursued his passion for writing.

His political career took off in 1963 when he became Committee Secretary for the Unión Cívica de Santiago. A year later, he joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), beginning a long affiliation with the group that would shape his political path. His dedication and leadership helped him climb the party ranks, eventually making him one of its key figures.

In 1982, Jorge Blanco was elected as the 48th president of the Dominican Republic. His presidency, lasting from 1982 to 1986, faced significant economic and social difficulties. He dealt with various domestic issues like economic instability and social unrest, especially the April 1984 riots triggered by his government's austerity measures.

Before his presidency, Jorge Blanco was a Senator for the PRD party, where he gained important legislative experience and built his political standing. His career spanned politics, law, and literature, showing his wide-ranging interests and commitment to Dominican culture. He stayed connected to his hometown of Santiago before moving to Santo Domingo, where he continued his political work until he passed away on December 26, 2010.
