Biography

Teng Fanglan, known after her death as Empress Teng, was a consort and empress of Eastern Wu during China's Three Kingdoms period. She lived around 258 to 284 CE and was deeply involved with the last tumultuous years of the Wu kingdom. She became Sun Hao's wife, the last emperor of Eastern Wu, whose rule was marked by autocracy and eventual defeat by the Jin dynasty.

Teng Fanglan married Sun Hao and became empress during a time of significant political chaos. Sun Hao, who took the throne in 264 CE, was infamous for his unpredictable and often harsh leadership. Despite the challenges at the imperial court, Empress Teng kept her position throughout her husband's reign. She was empress from 264 until Eastern Wu fell in 280 CE, when Sun Hao surrendered to the Jin dynasty's Emperor Wu.

After the Jin dynasty conquered Eastern Wu in 280 CE, Sun Hao and his family, including Empress Teng, were taken to Luoyang, the capital of Jin. The Jin emperor gave Sun Hao the title of Marquis of Guiming, allowing him to live comfortably but as a captive. Empress Teng stayed with her husband in this diminished role, continuing as his consort after losing the kingdom they once ruled.

There are few historical records about Empress Teng, as was typical for imperial consorts whose lives were usually noted in connection to their husbands. Her personal name, Fanglan, is mentioned in historical texts, but detailed accounts of her actions or influence at court are limited. She is known to have witnessed and participated in one of the big political shifts of the Three Kingdoms era: the end of one of the three major warring states as it was absorbed into a unified China under Jin.

Before Fame

We don't have much information on the early life of Teng Fanglan from historical records. She was born into a Chinese family during the late Han and Three Kingdoms period, a time marked by the fall of the Han dynasty and the rise of three rival states: Wei, Shu, and Wu. Like many noble families back then, the Teng clan had to deal with the ongoing power struggles and changing loyalties of the time.

She gained prominence by marrying Sun Hao, who became the ruler of Eastern Wu in 264 CE after Emperor Jing's death. When Sun Hao took the throne, Teng Fanglan became empress, putting her at the heart of the Wu royal court during its final, tumultuous years. Sun Hao's court was notorious for its dangerous environment, as the emperor was known to be mistrustful, cruel, and unpredictable toward his officials and subjects.
