Before Fame
Toivo Hjalmar Silén was born in late 19th-century Finland when it was a grand duchy under Russian control, before it gained independence in 1917. During his youth, Finland was rapidly modernizing, with cities growing and more opportunities for education and cultural activities. Attending the Helsinki Normal Lyceum put him among the educated individuals of his time and introduced him to the cultural developments of early 20th-century Helsinki.
The Finnish film industry was just starting when Särkkä began his career, with domestic film production only slowly emerging in the early 1900s.
