Biography

Tarique Rahman, born on November 20, 1968, and also known as Tarique Zia, is a Bangladeshi politician who has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 2026. Born in East Pakistan, he is the oldest son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, which places him in one of Bangladesh's most notable political families. He studied at several well-known institutions in Bangladesh, including the University of Dhaka, Dhaka Residential Model College, BAF Shaheen College Dhaka, Adamjee Cantonment College, and Saint Joseph Higher Secondary School. He is married to Zubaida Rahman.

Rahman started his political career during the time his mother Khaleda Zia was Prime Minister, gaining prominence in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He became quite influential during this time, but also faced criticism for allegedly using Hawa Bhaban as an unofficial power center. After the Awami League won the 2008 general election, Rahman went into self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom, citing safety concerns and accusing the authorities of political persecution.

Between 2008 and 2025, while in exile, Rahman faced many legal battles. He was convicted on several charges, including corruption, bribery, money laundering, illegal acquisition of wealth, and involvement in grenade attacks. A total of 84 cases were filed against him from 2007 to 2024. The BNP always argued that these charges were politically driven and without justification. Rahman's legal situation changed dramatically after the July 2024 uprising in Bangladesh, which led to major political changes in the country.

In 2024, after the political upheaval, courts cleared Rahman of all charges and overturned his previous sentences. This legal turnaround allowed him to return to Bangladesh in late 2025 after seventeen years in exile. His return was politically successful, as he led the BNP to win the 2026 general election and became Prime Minister. His comeback marked a significant change in Bangladeshi politics, a fact acknowledged internationally when Time Magazine included him in their list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2026.

Before Fame

Tarique Rahman was born into a politically prominent family in Bangladesh, as the son of President Ziaur Rahman and future Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. His early life was influenced by the political upheaval in Bangladesh during the 1970s and 1980s, including his father's assassination in 1981 when he was just twelve. This tragic event pushed his family into the national political spotlight, with his mother becoming a key opposition leader.

Rahman began his political career in the 1990s as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, headed by his mother, switched power with the Awami League. He was educated at several top institutions in Bangladesh, which prepared him for a political career. However, as he rose through the party ranks, there were increasing concerns about nepotism and dynastic politics in the country.
