Biography

Victor James Osimhen, born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a professional footballer who plays as a striker. He's currently on loan at Galatasaray in the Turkish Süper Lig and is the vice-captain of the Nigeria national team. Known for his speed, strength, aerial skills, and goal-scoring ability, Osimhen is one of the top strikers in world football today.

He started his senior club career in Germany with VfL Wolfsburg in 2017. Later, he was loaned to Belgian club Charleroi for the 2018–19 season. He then moved to French Ligue 1 club Lille, scoring eighteen goals in one season, which caught the attention of major European clubs. In 2020, Napoli signed him for around €80 million, marking a big step in his career and setting high hopes for his performance in Italian football.

At Napoli, Osimhen became one of Serie A's leading forwards. He won the Serie A Best Young Player award for the 2021–22 season and had an outstanding 2022–23 campaign, scoring 26 goals to become the league's top scorer, setting a record for an African player in Serie A. His standout performances helped Napoli win their first Serie A title in 33 years. He was named Best Striker and Serie A Footballer of the Year, and he holds the record for most goals by an African player in Serie A.

Before the 2024–25 season, Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan, continuing his impressive form by becoming the Süper Lig's top scorer and winning a domestic double with the club. Internationally, he debuted for Nigeria in June 2017 and has been a key player for the Super Eagles, playing in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, 2023, and 2025 and reaching the final in 2023. He's currently the second highest all-time goalscorer for the Nigeria national team.

Osimhen gained wide recognition in 2023, finishing eighth in the Ballon d'Or rankings, becoming the first Nigerian to be in the top ten for this award. The same year, he was named African Footballer of the Year, the first Nigerian to win since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. On May 29, 2023, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari honored him as a Member of the Federal Republic for his contributions to sport and national pride.

Before Fame

Victor Osimhen grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, in conditions that fueled his resilience and determination. Lagos, Africa's largest city, has produced many football stars, and Osimhen came from a youth scene where the sport provided both a release and a chance. He progressed through youth football to represent Nigeria in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot while his country won the tournament, marking him as a promising young striker in global youth football.

After the tournament, Osimhen moved to the German Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg, starting his professional career at just eighteen. His early years in Europe required major adjustments, and he had limited opportunities at Wolfsburg. A loan to Charleroi in Belgium was key, giving him consistent playing time. Moving to Lille in France gave him a full season at a top European league to show his skills before his switch to Napoli boosted his international profile.
