Biography
Yakubu Ayegbeni, simply known as Yakubu, was born on November 22, 1982, in Benin City, Nigeria. A powerful striker nicknamed 'The Yak,' he became one of the most effective African forwards in the English Premier League, scoring 96 goals during his time at Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers, placing him as the fourth highest African goal scorer in the league's history.
Yakubu first gained attention with his performances in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League while playing for Israeli club Maccabi Haifa. These performances earned him a loan move to Portsmouth, then in the Football League First Division. When Portsmouth earned promotion to the Premier League in 2003, Yakubu's transfer was made permanent, and he quickly became known as a reliable goal scorer in the top tier of English football.
After Portsmouth, Yakubu moved to Middlesbrough, where he continued to score consistently before joining Everton in 2007. At Goodison Park, he played some of his most memorable games, working well with manager David Moyes's attacking strategies. Yakubu scored over 100 goals in English football and appeared in over 250 Premier League matches. His time in England is also noted for a brief but significant period at Blackburn Rovers, after which he moved abroad before retiring from professional soccer.
Internationally, Yakubu was a key player for Nigeria's national football team. He ranks as the fourth highest scorer for the Super Eagles and represented Nigeria in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He also played in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. His international career lasted over a decade and showed his consistent ability to score at the highest levels.
Before Fame
Growing up in Benin City, Nigeria, Yakubu honed his football skills in a country that loves the sport and has a growing pipeline of talent moving to European leagues. In the 1990s, Nigerian football gained global recognition after the Super Eagles' strong performances at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the national team's gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. This created an environment that inspired many young Nigerian players to chase professional careers abroad.
Yakubu's rise began in Israel, where he joined Maccabi Haifa and stood out in the UEFA Champions League during the 2002–03 season. Maccabi Haifa's run in that competition, which included matches against teams like Manchester United and Real Madrid, gave Yakubu exposure to a broader audience and showed he could perform well against top opponents, eventually leading him to the English football market.
