Biography

Yassine Bounou, commonly known by the mononym Bono, was born on 5 April 1991 in Montreal, Canada, to Moroccan parents. He returned to Morocco with his family at the age of three and was raised there, eventually beginning his football development through the youth academy of Wydad AC, one of Morocco's most storied clubs. Though born abroad, Bounou grew up immersed in Moroccan football culture and went on to represent his adopted homeland at the highest levels of the international game.

Bounou's senior career took shape primarily in Spain, where he accumulated over 150 La Liga appearances and more than 50 in the Segunda División. His most celebrated spell in European football came at Sevilla FC, where during the 2021–22 season he became the first goalkeeper in the club's history to win the Zamora Trophy, awarded annually to the goalkeeper with the best goals-against ratio in La Liga. His performances in Spain drew widespread attention and established him as one of the top shot-stoppers in European football. He subsequently moved to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, continuing his career at the elite level.

At the international level, Bounou has been a full senior international for Morocco since 2013, having previously represented the country at the under-23 level during the 2012 Olympic Games. He has appeared in two FIFA World Cup tournaments and five Africa Cup of Nations competitions. The pinnacle of his international career came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Morocco made an extraordinary run to the semi-finals, becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage of the competition. Bounou was a central figure in that campaign, and his performances earned him the Golden Glove award as the tournament's best goalkeeper. Morocco ultimately finished fourth in the tournament.

Following his contributions to Morocco's historic World Cup campaign, Bounou was appointed an Officer of the Order of the Throne in 2022, one of Morocco's highest state honors, in recognition of his service to the nation through sport. He has since taken on the captaincy of the Morocco national team. Beyond individual accolades, he ranked thirteenth in the 2023 Ballon d'Or voting and third in the 2023 Yashin Trophy, which honors the world's best goalkeeper. He also placed third in The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award in both 2022 and 2023, and second in the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper rankings in 2022, reflecting his sustained standing among the global elite of his position.

Before Fame

Born in Montreal to Moroccan immigrant parents, Yassine Bounou spent only the earliest years of his life in Canada before his family relocated back to Morocco when he was three years old. Growing up in Morocco, he was drawn to football from a young age and joined the youth setup at Wydad AC in Casablanca, one of the country's most prominent clubs. His early development in the competitive environment of Moroccan club football helped lay the groundwork for a professional career.

Bounou's path to prominence was gradual, shaped by years of experience in Spain's football pyramid. He worked through the Spanish league system, logging significant time in the Segunda División before earning consistent opportunities in La Liga. It was patient progression rather than overnight recognition that defined his route to the top, and his technical refinement and positional discipline during those formative seasons in Spain were central to his eventual emergence as a world-class goalkeeper.
