Biography
Yoon Suk Yeol was born on December 18, 1960, in Seongbuk District, Seoul, South Korea. He studied law at Seoul National University, where he got both his bachelor's and master's degrees, and then completed his training at the Judicial Research and Training Institute. He worked as a public prosecutor for many years, becoming known for taking on high-profile corruption cases regardless of political ties. As head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office, he led major prosecutions, including those against former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak, who were both convicted of corruption and abuse of power. He is married to Kim Keon Hee.
In 2019, President Moon Jae-in appointed Yoon as Prosecutor General of South Korea, the top prosecutorial role in the country. His time in office was marked by clashes with the Moon administration, especially through investigations into Cho Kuk, a close political ally of Moon serving as Minister of Justice. Cho eventually resigned amid the controversy. These disputes with the government raised Yoon's public profile and made him popular with conservative voters who saw him as a fair and independent legal authority. He stepped down as Prosecutor General in 2021.
Yoon announced his candidacy for the 2022 presidential election on June 29, 2021, and soon joined the People Power Party, winning its presidential nomination in November 2021. He ran on a conservative platform focused on economic deregulation, a tough stance on North Korea, and the proposed removal of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. On March 9, 2022, he narrowly defeated Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae Myung by less than one percentage point in one of the closest elections in South Korean history. He was inaugurated as the 13th President of South Korea on May 10, 2022, becoming the first president born after the Korean War.
As president, Yoon focused on strengthening ties with the United States and Japan, moving away from his predecessor's cautious regional approach. He received several international honors during this time, including being featured in Time 100 in 2022 and winning the Profile in Courage Award in 2023, along with foreign awards like the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the Order of the Bath, and the Order of the White Eagle. However, his presidency faced growing domestic challenges, leading to a constitutional and political crisis that resulted in his removal from office in 2025. Afterward, Yoon was found guilty of leading an insurrection and is now serving a life sentence in prison, marking a significant downfall for an elected South Korean leader.
Before Fame
Growing up in Seoul during the 1960s and 1970s, Yoon Suk Yeol experienced a South Korea marked by authoritarian rule, rapid industrialization, and strong pressure to excel academically. He attended Chungam High School and then got into Seoul National University, the most prestigious school in the country, where he studied law. His academic and legal career developed in a South Korea that was modernizing but also politically divided.
Yoon passed the Korean bar exam after several attempts, a fact that later became part of his public persona as someone who perseveres through setbacks. He joined the prosecutor's office and worked his way through various positions over the years, earning a reputation for careful and aggressive case-building. This work as a prosecutor, rather than a political background, formed the basis of his rise to national prominence.
