Strategic Narrative Overview
YPG-led fighters renewed their offensive on 18 June 2015, launching a full operation on 1 July. By 4 July, Sarrin, the village of Khirbat al-Burj, and the Sarrin Grain Silos were besieged. ISIL broke the siege on 12 July after receiving reinforcements. YPG and FSA forces re-established the siege on 24 July, fully restoring encirclement of the grain silos and Khirbat al-Burj by 25 July.
01 / The Origins
The Battle of Sarrin took place amid the broader Syrian Civil War in the northeastern Aleppo Governorate, where the Islamic State had established control over the town of Sarrin and its surrounding region. Kurdish YPG forces and allied Free Syrian Army units had been conducting a stalled offensive for nearly two months before escalating their operations, partly spurred by ISIL's Kobanî massacre in late June 2015.
03 / The Outcome
On 27 July 2015, YPG-led forces fully captured Sarrin and the surrounding region, including 25 villages and more than 20 farmlands. The YPG formally declared the end of their offensive, consolidating Kurdish and allied FSA control over the area and removing the Islamic State's presence from this part of the Aleppo Governorate.
