Strategic Narrative Overview
Fighting resumed on 28 September 2014, despite the ceasefire, as DPR forces repeatedly attempted to seize the airport from its Ukrainian defenders. The battle intensified through late 2014 and into January 2015, with some of the war's most severe urban combat occurring at the site. Ukrainian defenders, nicknamed 'cyborgs' for their tenacity, held out for months under relentless assault before their positions became untenable.
01 / The Origins
Following the First Battle of Donetsk Airport in May 2014, Ukrainian forces retained control of Donetsk International Airport amid a broader conflict between Ukrainian government troops and Russian-backed separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic. Though the Minsk Protocol ceasefire was signed on 5 September 2014, the airport occupied a contested position between the two sides' lines and represented the last foothold of Ukrainian government control within Donetsk city.
03 / The Outcome
On 21 January 2015, DPR forces overran the remaining Ukrainian positions at the airport. Ukrainian personnel were killed, forced to retreat, or taken prisoner, ending Ukrainian presence in Donetsk city. The fall of the airport handed the DPR a significant territorial and symbolic victory, consolidating separatist control over Donetsk and dealing a blow to Ukrainian defensive efforts in the region.
