Strategic Narrative Overview
Fighting erupted on 13 July 2014 around Tripoli International Airport, pitting the Islamist-aligned New General National Congress militias against the Zintani brigades. Weeks of sustained combat caused extensive damage to the airport's infrastructure, including the destruction of aircraft and terminal buildings, as both sides traded control of key positions around the facility.
01 / The Origins
Following the June 2014 Libyan parliamentary election, Islamist factions rejected the results and the authority of the newly elected House of Representatives. A coalition of Islamist militias launched 'Operation Libya Dawn' as a coup d'état effort to seize control of Tripoli, its institutions, and its main airport from rival Zintani brigades who had held the facility since 2011.
03 / The Outcome
By August 2014, Islamist forces captured the airport, though the facility was left largely destroyed in the process, rendering it non-operational. The victory enabled the New General National Congress to reassert itself in Tripoli and deepened Libya's split into two rival governments, accelerating the broader civil war.
