Nigel Mansell was the dominant force in the 1992 Formula One season, driving for Williams-Renault. Competing at his home circuit of Silverstone before a passionate British crowd, he qualified on pole position and was the heavy favourite to win.
On 12 July 1992, Mansell led every one of the 59 laps, won from pole, and set the fastest lap, securing a commanding victory. Riccardo Patrese finished second in the other Williams, with Martin Brundle third in a Benetton-Ford. Future champions Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, and Mika Häkkinen also participated.
After the chequered flag, British fans flooded the track to celebrate, momentarily blocking Mansell's car from returning to the pits. The win was his 28th career victory, overtaking Jackie Stewart's record to make him the most successful British F1 driver in terms of wins, a record that stood until Lewis Hamilton's 2014 Singapore Grand Prix victory.
