Juan Pablo Montoya started from pole and built a substantial lead over Ralf Schumacher during the race, but a malfunction with the refuelling rig during his pit stop on lap 24 left him stationary for over 20 seconds, costing him the lead. Additionally, a first-corner airborne collision between Michael Schumacher and Luciano Burti caused debris and a race restart.
The 2001 German Grand Prix was held on 29 July 2001 at the Hockenheimring. Ralf Schumacher inherited the lead after Montoya's refuelling delay and went on to win, with Rubens Barrichello second and Jacques Villeneuve third — Villeneuve's final Formula One podium finish.
Ralf Schumacher moved to third in the Drivers' Championship, displacing Barrichello. Ferrari retained the Constructors' lead with 124 points, while Williams closed the gap to McLaren by ten points. The race was the final Formula One event held on Hockenheimring's long 6.825 km layout before reconfiguration in 2002.
