New FIA regulations for the 2014 season mandated a switch from naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8 engines to 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid power units. This was the most sweeping technical overhaul in decades, ending Sebastian Vettel's dominant era of nine consecutive victories and reshuffling competitive order across all teams.
On 16 March 2014, Nico Rosberg won the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne's Grand Prix Circuit over 58 laps, marking the sport's return to turbocharged engines. Kevin Magnussen finished second on debut for McLaren, while Daniel Ricciardo was later disqualified for illegal fuel flow, and Jenson Button was classified third, recording his 50th and final podium.
Rosberg took the lead of the Drivers' Championship for the first time in his career. McLaren secured a rare double podium, their last until the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. Daniil Kvyat became the youngest points-scorer in Formula One history at the time, a record later broken by Max Verstappen at the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix.
