ISIS maintained a siege of Kuweires Military Airbase in Aleppo Governorate for nearly three years, isolating hundreds of Syrian Arab Army soldiers within the base and threatening government logistical lines linking central Syria to Aleppo.
Beginning 14 September 2015, the Syrian Arab Army, National Defence Forces, and Al-Ba'ath Battalion launched a coordinated offensive in Aleppo Governorate's southeastern countryside. A second phase opened mid-October further south to secure the main supply corridor from central Syria to Aleppo.
The operation sought to relieve the besieged garrison at Kuweires, restore depth to government lines of communication into Aleppo province, and potentially sever the Aleppo–Raqqah highway, which would have divided ISIS-held territory in Syria.
