Juhanda, an individual with apparent extremist motivations, planned and carried out an attack on a Christian church in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The attack was part of a broader wave of ISIS-linked violence in Indonesia during 2016, following an earlier assault on a priest in Medan in August of that year.
On November 13, 2016, Juhanda detonated a Molotov bomb in front of Oikumene Church in Loa Janan Ilir, Samarinda, while children were playing outside. One toddler was killed and three others were injured in the explosion.
In September 2017, Juhanda was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, while four accomplices received sentences of six to seven years. The attack reinforced concerns about the threat posed by ISIS-affiliated extremism in Indonesia and underscored the vulnerability of religious minorities to targeted violence.
