Suicide bombers affiliated with ISIS targeted the Kampung Melayu bus terminal in East Jakarta. The attack occurred amid a period of heightened ISIS-linked violence globally, coming two days after the Manchester Arena bombing and coinciding with the outbreak of fighting between Philippine forces and ISIS-linked militants in Marawi.
On 24 May 2017, two explosions detonated at the Kampung Melayu bus terminal in East Jakarta, Indonesia. Police determined that multiple explosive devices had been placed in a toilet and elsewhere in the terminal. The blasts killed five people—three policemen and two attackers—and wounded eleven others who were transported to hospitals across East Jakarta.
The attack was identified by the Indonesian Police Watch as the deadliest assault ever carried out against the Indonesian National Police up to that point. It highlighted the continued threat of ISIS-inspired domestic terrorism in Indonesia. The record was later surpassed in 2018 during a standoff between police and terrorists at the Mako Brimob detention facility.
