Malaysia had hosted Formula One World Championship races at the Sepang International Circuit since 1999, but organisers chose not to renew the race contract beyond 2017, citing financial and commercial considerations, making this round the last under existing agreements.
On 1 October 2017, the 2017 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix was held at the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor. Lewis Hamilton led the Drivers' Championship with a 28-point advantage over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, while Mercedes held a commanding 102-point lead in the Constructors' Championship over Ferrari.
With no contract secured for 2018 or subsequent seasons, the 2017 race became the last Malaysian Grand Prix, concluding the country's 19-year involvement as a Formula One World Championship host and removing Sepang from the annual F1 calendar.
