Mercedes had dominated the 2019 Formula One season, winning every race prior to the Austrian Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing, powered by Honda engines, had been developing competitiveness throughout the season, and the Red Bull Ring — the team's home circuit — provided a favorable opportunity to challenge Mercedes.
On 30 June 2019, Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, driving the Red Bull Racing RB15 with a Honda power unit. This was the ninth round of the 2019 Formula One World Championship, the 33rd running of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Verstappen's victory ended Mercedes' unbroken run of wins in the 2019 season, marking the first win for a Honda-powered Formula One car since Jenson Button's triumph at the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. It also gave Red Bull back-to-back victories at their home Austrian Grand Prix.
