CONCACAF expanded the Gold Cup field from 12 to 16 teams beginning with this edition, announced in February 2018. The abolition of the FIFA Confederations Cup also meant the Gold Cup winner would no longer qualify for a major intercontinental tournament, removing an incentive absent since 2009.
The 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup was hosted primarily in the United States, with Costa Rica and Jamaica hosting first-round double-headers. Sixteen national teams competed across groups and knockout rounds, culminating in a final between Mexico and the United States, which Mexico won 1–0.
Mexico extended their record Gold Cup title tally to eight and their overall CONCACAF championship count to eleven, cementing their dominance in the region. The United States, as defending champions, were defeated in the final, failing to retain the title they had won in 2017.
