Biography
Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, born on January 7, 1985, is a British Formula One driver with a record-tying seven World Drivers' Championship titles, matching Michael Schumacher. He has the most wins (105), most pole positions (104), and most podium finishes (204) in Formula One history. Growing up in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton started karting at six and quickly showed his talent. His skills caught the eye of McLaren's Ron Dennis, who brought Hamilton into the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme in 1998 when he was only thirteen.
After winning the Karting World Cup and European Championship in 2000, Hamilton excelled in junior racing series. He won the Formula 3 Euro Series and the GP2 Series before joining McLaren in Formula One for the 2007 season. His entry at the Australian Grand Prix marked him as the first Black Formula One driver. His rookie year was remarkable: he won four races and finished just one point behind Kimi Räikkönen, tying on points with teammate Fernando Alonso. In 2008, Hamilton became the youngest World Drivers' Champion by securing the title with a dramatic final-lap overtake in Brazil.
Hamilton left McLaren in 2013 after fifteen years and joined Mercedes, teaming up with former karting opponent Nico Rosberg. He scored his first Mercedes win at the Hungarian Grand Prix that year. New engine rules in 2014 led to Mercedes' dominance. Hamilton and Rosberg won 51 of 59 races in what was called the Silver War, with Hamilton taking championships in 2014 and 2015. After Rosberg retired following his 2016 title win, Hamilton continued to win, adding titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. His seventh title came in 2020, tying Schumacher's record.
Aside from racing, Hamilton champions diversity and inclusion in motorsport and society, advocating for racial equality and environmental issues. He was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire and later knighted for his contributions to motorsport. Hamilton received the Laureus World Sports Award for Breakthrough of the Year in 2008, the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award, and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2020. He also earned the Segrave Trophy in 2007 and was L'Équipe Champion of Champions in 2020. In 2025, Hamilton made headlines by joining Ferrari, marking another milestone in his career.
Before Fame
Lewis Hamilton was born on January 7, 1985, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, to Anthony Hamilton and Carmen Lockhart. He went to The John Henry Newman School in Stevenage. His dad took on several jobs to support Lewis's early karting career, and Lewis started racing karts at just six years old. His talent was clear from the start, and by his early teens, he had already won multiple national karting titles.
When he was ten, Hamilton met Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony and asked to join McLaren, saying he wanted to race for the team someday. Dennis saw his determination and signed him to the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme in 1998, providing funds and a clear development path.
