Ferrari chose the Mugello circuit — which they own — to host a special commemorative race marking their 1000th Formula One World Championship entry. The 2020 season's compressed calendar created an opportunity to add new venues, and Mugello was selected partly for its symbolic significance to the Ferrari team.
Held on 13 September 2020 at Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, the race featured two red flags and three standing starts — the first time since the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix that a race had been stopped twice. Lewis Hamilton won ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas for Mercedes' third 1–2 finish of the season, with Alexander Albon of Red Bull third.
Alexander Albon became the first Thai driver and the first Asian driver outside Japan to achieve a Formula One podium finish. The race remained, as of 2026, the only Tuscan Grand Prix ever staged and the only Formula One race held at Mugello. It was also the first race of the 2020 season to admit spectators.
