Beijing was awarded hosting rights for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur in 2015. The Games were subsequently overshadowed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which prompted the IPC to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes after multiple National Paralympic Committees threatened a boycott.
The 13th Winter Paralympic Games were held in Beijing, China, from 4 to 13 March 2022, featuring 564 athletes from 46 NPCs competing across 78 medal events in six sports. Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from competition, and a replacement event was later held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
Host nation China topped the medal table with 61 medals including 18 gold, setting a new record as the most successful Asian country at a single Winter Paralympics. Ukraine achieved its best-ever performance, finishing second. Beijing became the first city in history to have hosted all four major Games: Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, Summer Paralympics, and Winter Paralympics.
