During the Syrian Civil War, ISIL launched an offensive into the western Hasakah Governorate, advancing to the western banks of the Khabur River, seizing dozens of villages, reaching Tell Tamer and Ras al-Ayn, and abducting 350–400 Assyrian Christian civilians as hostages.
In spring 2015, the Kurdish YPG and allied forces launched a counteroffensive dubbed Operation Commander Rûbar Qamishlo. Kurdish-led forces fought to reclaim territory across the western Hasakah Governorate, engaging ISIL across multiple fronts including the Abzulaziz mountain range and the Ras al-Ayn District.
The Kurdish-led forces successfully expelled ISIL from the western countryside of the Hasakah Governorate and the Abzulaziz mountain range. By 31 May 2015, major offensive operations in western Hasakah concluded, and the campaign expanded into the Tell Abyad region of the northern Raqqa Governorate.
