The Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna controlled the city of Derna, making it a significant Islamist stronghold in eastern Libya. The Libyan National Army sought to reassert authority over the city as part of its broader campaign to unify control of the region.
Beginning on 7 May 2018, the Libyan National Army launched a military campaign against Derna. By 28 June 2018 the LNA declared control of the city, though clashes in the old city continued. The Shura Council dissolved and reformed as the Derna Protection Force, which eventually surrendered on 12 February 2019.
The fall of Derna to the LNA eliminated the last significant Islamist-held urban stronghold in eastern Libya. The Derna Protection Force's final surrender on 12 February 2019 marked the complete consolidation of LNA authority over the city, reshaping the balance of power in the region.
