Al-Shabaab, the Somali Islamist militant group, targeted the Kenyan-run AMISOM base at El Adde in Gedo region, exploiting the vulnerability of the forward operating position. Kenya had been a target of Al-Shabaab reprisals since deploying troops into Somalia in 2011 as part of regional counter-insurgency efforts.
On 15 January 2016, Al-Shabaab launched a large-scale assault on the Kenyan AMISOM military base in El Adde, Somalia. The attack overwhelmed the Kenyan Defence Forces garrison, resulting in mass casualties and the overrunning of the base. Media described the engagement as a military massacre and a disaster for the KDF.
The battle became the deadliest single attack in the history of the African Union Mission to Somalia and the worst military defeat suffered by the Kenya Defence Forces since the country's independence in 1963. The Kenyan government suppressed information about the scale of losses, drawing domestic and international criticism over transparency.
