Government forces sought to extend control in the District of Nihm, a strategically significant area approximately 40 km east of the capital Sana'a, bordering the governorates of Al-Jawf and Marib. The area held key military infrastructure occupied by opposing forces during the broader Yemeni conflict.
Beginning in mid-December 2015, government forces launched the Nihm Offensive, capturing Mas camp and then, on 19–20 December, seizing the 312th and 334th Armored Brigade camps with troops advancing from both Marib and Al-Jawf. The operation met fierce resistance from opposing forces throughout the engagements.
Despite sustained resistance, government forces ultimately secured the 312th Armored Corps camp by February 2016, consolidating their hold over key military installations in the District of Nihm and strengthening their northeastern approach toward the capital Sana'a.
