On the afternoon of February 9, 2004, Maura Murray emailed her professors and work supervisor claiming a family death that relatives later denied. She then left the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus and drove north in her car for reasons that have never been established.
Murray's vehicle crashed on Route 112 near Woodsville, New Hampshire, at approximately 7:27 p.m. A passing motorist spoke with her briefly; she declined help and claimed she had already called for assistance. When police arrived at 7:46 p.m., Murray had vanished, leaving her car and personal belongings behind.
Despite extensive searches, public appeals, and media coverage including appearances on 20/20, Disappeared, and an Oxygen documentary series, Murray has never been found. The case was transferred to New Hampshire's cold case unit in 2009 and remains an open suspicious missing-person investigation with no confirmed sightings or definitive leads.
