A coordinated multi-front offensive by Syrian opposition forces, including the Southern Operations Room, Tahrir al-Sham, the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army, and the Syrian Free Army, converged on Damascus from multiple directions. The Syrian Army withdrew from numerous outposts on the capital's outskirts, leaving the city exposed to rebel advance.
On 7–8 December 2024, opposition forces entered the Rif Dimashq region and advanced to within 20 kilometres of Damascus before breaching the city itself. Rebel fighters entered the Barzeh neighborhood while simultaneous offensives were launched into Homs from the north and from the southeast into the capital, overwhelming government defenses.
President Bashar al-Assad fled Damascus by air and was granted asylum in Moscow, effectively ending his family's decades-long grip on power. The fall of the Syrian government marked the collapse of Assad's regime, a significant turning point in the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.
