Three individuals described by British authorities as radical Islamist terrorists carried out a premeditated attack, with the Islamic State later claiming responsibility. The perpetrators wore fake explosive vests, suggesting intent to maximize fear and casualties beyond their weapons.
On 3 June 2017, a van was deliberately driven into pedestrians on London Bridge before crashing on Borough High Street. The three occupants then moved to Borough Market, stabbing people in restaurants and pubs. Metropolitan Police and City of London Police firearms officers shot all three attackers dead.
Eight people were killed and forty-eight injured, including four unarmed police officers who intervened. The attack prompted heightened security measures across the United Kingdom and renewed public debate about counter-terrorism policy, coming weeks after the Manchester Arena bombing and the Westminster Bridge attack earlier in 2017.
