On June 11, 2022, Christian Glass called 911 for roadside assistance after his vehicle became stuck in Silver Plume, Colorado. During the response, Glass exhibited signs of a mental health crisis and refused to exit his vehicle, leading to a 70-minute standoff with law enforcement.
Clear Creek County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Buen shot and killed 22-year-old Glass during the standoff. Glass held triple citizenship in the United States, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The incident drew immediate scrutiny over the conduct of the multiple officers who responded to what had begun as a call for roadside help.
Eight officers faced criminal charges. Deputy Buen was convicted in February 2025 of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment, receiving the maximum three-year sentence. Sergeant Kyle Gould pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges. The Glass family secured a $19 million settlement with Colorado and local municipalities, which also required significant law enforcement reforms.
