Cause

Yugoslavia qualified for the tournament but was disqualified due to the country's violent breakup and ensuing warfare. As runners-up in qualification, Denmark was invited to replace them just days before the tournament began, giving the squad minimal preparation time.

Event

The 1992 UEFA European Championship was held in Sweden from 10 to 26 June 1992, contested by eight national teams. Denmark, the late replacement for Yugoslavia, progressed through the group stage and knockout rounds to reach the final against reunified Germany.

Consequence

Denmark defeated Germany 2–0 in the final to claim their first and only European Championship title. The tournament was the last to feature eight teams, award two points for a win, and operate without the back-pass rule, which was introduced immediately afterward; the 1996 edition expanded to 16 teams.
