Biography

Abd al-Aziz Jarad, also known as Abdelaziz Djerad, was born on February 12, 1954, in Khenchela, northeastern Algeria. He is an Algerian politician, diplomat, and political scientist with a strong academic background before joining the government. He studied at the University of Algiers 1 and Paris Nanterre University in France, where he laid the groundwork for his career in political science. This mix of Algerian and French education influenced his career in the years to come.

Jarad's career bridged academia and public service. He worked as a university teacher and political scientist, focusing on political theory and governance, and was respected in Algerian scholarly circles. Although not a key figure during Abdelaziz Bouteflika's long presidency, he was trusted enough to be called upon during a critical time in Algeria's political scene.

His major public role began on December 28, 2019, when President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed him Prime Minister of Algeria, shortly after Bouteflika resigned in April 2019 due to the mass protest movement known as the Hirak. Jarad took office during a time of instability, with public demands for significant reform. He was Prime Minister for about eighteen months, until June 30, 2021, during a turbulent period following Bouteflika's era.

After his term as Prime Minister, Jarad transitioned to diplomatic service. In September 2021, he was appointed Algeria's ambassador to Sweden, allowing him to represent Algeria internationally, although in a less high-profile role. This move reflects Algeria's practice of assigning senior political figures to diplomatic positions after their government service.

Throughout his career, Jarad exemplified the academic-turned-government official often seen in post-independence Algeria. His scholarly background and political reliability made him an important figure in the country's institutions, especially during a significant transition in Algeria's recent history.

Before Fame

Abdelaziz Jarad grew up in Khenchela during the early years after Algeria gained independence, a time when the country was focused on education and building institutions. His generation was one of the first to grow up completely in an independent Algeria, influenced by the single-party state's focus on creating skilled people for national development. He studied at the University of Algiers 1, a leading school in the country, and then went on to Paris Nanterre University in France, known for its critical social science studies.

This educational background prepared him for a career in teaching at universities and researching political science, areas that in Algeria often overlapped with government and policy-making. Throughout much of the Bouteflika era, Jarad held academic and advisory positions, gaining knowledge in political governance while staying somewhat away from top-tier executive power. He rose to national prominence later in his career, stepping into the spotlight when Algeria needed individuals with both credibility in institutions and academic respectability.
