Biography
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was born in 1960 in Qandato, Sudan. He made a career in the Sudanese Armed Forces, eventually becoming the General Inspector before reaching the top levels of national leadership. His military education included training with the Sudanese Popular Resistance program, which influenced his early military and ideological development within Sudan's armed forces.
Al-Burhan became a nationally recognized figure in April 2019 after the Sudanese Revolution removed longstanding president Omar al-Bashir. The Transitional Military Council (TMC) was formed to guide the country after Bashir, but its first leader, Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, resigned after just one day due to public opposition linking him to the old regime. Al-Burhan then took over as leader of the TMC, presenting a relatively more agreeable face to the protestors while still representing the military.
Negotiations between the military and civilian opposition resulted in a draft constitutional declaration, which took effect on 17 August 2019. The Transitional Sovereignty Council, the country's interim head during this period, was formed on 21 August 2019 with al-Burhan as chairman. The 2020 Juba Peace Agreement extended his role by 20 months beyond the initially planned handover in February 2021, prolonging military control during the transition.
In October 2021, al-Burhan orchestrated a coup, dismissing the Sovereignty Council and arresting civilian leaders, including Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. He later reformed the Sovereignty Council with new members but kept the chairmanship. This action was widely condemned internationally, sparked mass protests in Sudan, and led to the suspension of foreign aid. It effectively broke down the fragile power-sharing setup agreed upon after the 2019 revolution.
Al-Burhan currently leads the Sudanese Armed Forces in the civil war against the Rapid Support Forces, a strong paramilitary group led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, who previously served with al-Burhan on the Sovereignty Council. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and widespread casualties. In July 2024, al-Burhan survived an assassination attempt, highlighting the unstable and dangerous atmosphere for Sudanese leaders during this ongoing war.
Before Fame
Born in 1960 in Qandato, Sudan, al-Burhan grew up during a time of ongoing political instability in Sudan, a country that had experienced several military coups and cycles of authoritarian rule since gaining independence in 1956. His formative years were during the rule of Jaafar Nimeiry and later Omar al-Bashir, whose Islamist-backed military government dominated Sudanese politics from 1989 onwards. In this setting, the military was the main seat of political power, offering ambitious officers a path to national influence.
Al-Burhan steadily advanced his career within the Sudanese Armed Forces, receiving training through the Sudanese Popular Resistance program and gaining experience over decades of service. He eventually became the General Inspector of the SAF, a senior role in the military hierarchy. His long military career prepared him for 2019 when Sudan's political crisis brought senior military figures to the forefront of the country's uncertain transition.
