Biography

Abdoulaye Wade was born on May 29, 1926, in Kébémer, Senegal, when it was still under French colonial rule. He studied in France, first attending Lycée Condorcet in Paris and then Marie and Louis Pasteur University, where he studied law and economics. This education gave him both legal skills and a strong understanding of French politics, which influenced his long career as an opposition leader and statesman. He holds both French and Senegalese citizenship.

Wade started the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) in 1974 to provide a liberal democratic alternative to the ruling Socialist Party, which had been in power since Senegal gained independence in 1960. Over more than twenty years, he became the leading opposition figure in Senegal, running for president in 1978, 1988, 1993, and 2000. Although he didn't win initially, he kept the pressure on the Socialist governments and rallied people looking for political change. His persistence, despite legal battles, detentions, and election losses, built his reputation as a determined political figure.

In 2000, Wade finally became president by defeating incumbent Abdou Diouf in a runoff. At 73, he was the oldest person to become Senegal's president, ending forty years of Socialist rule. His election was seen as a major democratic breakthrough in West Africa. He was re-elected in 2007 with a clear majority. During his presidency, he invested heavily in infrastructure, such as road projects and urban development in Dakar, although there were criticisms about the transparency of public fund management.

Wade's second term stirred controversy with allegations of centralizing power, stifling dissent, and trying to set up his son, Karim Wade, for succession. In 2012, he ran for a third term, claiming that a constitutional revision during his first term reset his term count. This view was disputed by many in Senegal's civil society, leading to protests by the Y'en a Marre movement. He lost in the second round to Macky Sall, a former prime minister and one-time ally. Wade conceded defeat, and the peaceful power transfer confirmed Senegal's reputation as a stable democracy.

Over his life, Wade received many honors for his political and public work. He was named a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Lion as well as the Order of Merit of Senegal. In 2005, he received the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize. He also received honorary doctorates from several universities, including University of Bordeaux-IV in 2000, Université d'Auvergne - Clermont I in 2002, University of Lyon-III and Marie and Louis Pasteur University in 2005, Paris-Sorbonne University in 2006, and the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 2009. He has been married to Viviane Wade, who was active during his presidency, particularly in public health advocacy.

Before Fame

Abdoulaye Wade grew up in colonial Senegal, where French rule and a mix of African and European political traditions influenced the society. He went to France for education, studying at Lycée Condorcet and later at Marie and Louis Pasteur University, focusing on law and economics. This education put him among African intellectuals who returned home with both credentials and a critical view of colonial power.

Back in Senegal, Wade worked as a lawyer and academic before diving into politics. When Senegal gained independence in 1960, it created opportunities for new political leaders, but power quickly centered around Léopold Sédar Senghor, Abdou Diouf, and the Socialist Party. Wade started the PDS in 1974 to challenge this power hold, and his work as a defense attorney and legal advocate boosted his public profile and gave him a platform to criticize the government.
