Biography

Abdukodir Khikmatzhon ugli Khusanov was born on February 29, 2004, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. As one of the few people born on a leap day, he developed his football skills through the youth academy at Bunyodkor, one of Uzbekistan's leading clubs. Here, he laid the technical groundwork that set him apart in European football. Playing as a center-back and right-back, he became known for his solid defense and ability to aid in transitions, catching the eye of clubs beyond Central Asia early on.

Khusanov started his senior career in 2022 with Energetik-BGU in Belarus, gaining valuable first-team experience in a competitive European league. After a season and a half there, he moved to Lens in France's top league, Ligue 1, in 2023. This move was historic as it made him the first Uzbek footballer in Ligue 1, opening doors for his country in European football.

At Lens, Khusanov quickly became a reliable and key player in defense. His strong performances gained him recognition not just in France, but across Europe. He played a crucial role in Lens's efforts, showing the calm and game-reading skills typical of top defenders. His stint in France paved the way for a move to elite club football in England.

In January 2025, Khusanov transferred to Manchester City in the English Premier League, again making history as the first Uzbek player in the league. Joining one of England's top clubs marked a big step both for him and for Uzbek football. At City, he joined an elite squad and got exposure to high-level competitions like the Champions League and domestic title races.

Internationally, Khusanov has represented Uzbekistan starting with the under-17 team and received his first senior call-up in 2023. He was part of the Uzbekistan squad for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, gaining experience in a major continental tournament. His international career is advancing alongside his club success, and he's seen as one of the most promising footballers from Central Asia in recent years.

Before Fame

Khusanov grew up in Tashkent, the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, where football has always been a popular sport with lots of academies and clubs supporting it. He joined Bunyodkor's youth setup, a club known for developing local talent, giving him structured coaching from a young age. His development happened during a time when Uzbek football was starting to reach out internationally, encouraging young players to look for opportunities in European leagues instead of just staying in the local competition.

Choosing to start his professional career in Belarus instead of staying in Uzbekistan or jumping straight to a major league showed a practical approach to player development. He prioritized getting regular playtime over immediate fame. This choice let him get used to European football at an easier level before taking on bigger challenges, a strategy that eventually helped prepare him for the demands of Ligue 1 and, later, the Premier League.
