Biography

Abdullah III Al-Salim Al-Sabah was born in Kuwait City in 1895, part of the ruling Al-Sabah family that had led Kuwait since the eighteenth century. He grew up when Kuwait was under British protection, set by the Anglo-Kuwaiti Agreement of 1899. This agreement let Britain handle Kuwait's foreign affairs while the Al-Sabah family stayed in charge internally. This setup influenced the political scene Abdullah learned in, giving him a deep understanding of both tribal governance traditions and the impact of British control in the Persian Gulf area.

Before Fame

Before becoming the ruler, Abdullah Al-Salim was involved in managing Kuwait's affairs and saw firsthand how the emirate changed after oil was found in commercial amounts in 1938. The surge in oil export revenues after World War II drastically changed Kuwait's economy, opening up new opportunities and challenges for modernization and independence. He grew up in a family that had long dealt with the competing interests of regional powers like the Ottoman Empire and Britain, providing him with practical experience in governance.
