Biography
Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah was born on May 13, 1930, in Kuwait City. He was part of the ruling Al-Sabah family that has led Kuwait since the 1700s. He worked his way up in Kuwait's public service during a time of quick national growth driven by oil money, eventually becoming a key figure in the country's modern politics. His career spanned many years, including top roles in both the military and civilian government, showing the mixed leadership roles expected of Al-Sabah family members.
Saad was the first head of Kuwait's Ministry of Interior until February 16, 1978, and also the first military officer to lead the Ministry of Defense starting in 1964. His experience as a general commander in Kuwait's military brought a unique approach to these jobs, combining security issues with government management. These roles came when Kuwait was strengthening its state systems after gaining independence from Britain in 1961 and dealing with the complex politics of the Gulf region.
From 1978 to 2006, Sheikh Saad was Kuwait's Prime Minister, one of the longest-serving in this role in the country's history. During these nearly 30 years, he led the country through major challenges, like the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and the Gulf War in 1991, which led to Kuwait's liberation by a U.S.-led international group. After Emir Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah died on January 15, 2006, Sheikh Saad became Emir of Kuwait. However, his time in office lasted only nine days. Concerns about his declining health led to the National Assembly questioning his ability to govern. He stepped down on January 24, 2006, making his reign one of the shortest in Kuwaiti history. He was followed by Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who went on to lead Kuwait for many years.
Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah died on May 13, 2008, at the Amiri Hospital in Kuwait, coincidentally on his birthday, at the age of seventy-eight. Throughout his career, he received many honors, including the Order of Mubarak the Great and the Order of Kuwait, as well as international awards like the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George from the UK and the Grand Cross Special Class of the Order of Merit of Germany.
