Biography

Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe was born on July 19, 1965, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. He studied at Addis Ababa University and Azusa Pacific University in the United States. His education and international experiences influenced how he approached governance and diplomacy when he held high office.

Hailemariam began his political career with the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the coalition that ruled Ethiopia from 1991. Under Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, he took on significant roles, serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs and deputy prime minister from 2010 to 2012. His diplomatic skills and ability to manage administrative tasks earned him trust within the ruling party's leadership.

After the sudden death of Meles Zenawi in August 2012, Hailemariam became acting prime minister. On September 15, 2012, he was elected as chairman of the EPRDF, officially making him the country's leader. His rise to prime minister marked a big change in Ethiopian politics, as he was the first leader from the Southern region to take the country's top office.

From 2012 to 2018, Hailemariam led Ethiopia through continued economic growth and infrastructure projects. He also served as chairperson of the African Union from 2013 to 2014, speaking for the continent on international stages. However, his government faced challenges like widespread civil unrest and protests starting in 2016, especially in the Oromia and Amhara regions.

On February 15, 2018, Hailemariam announced his resignation as prime minister and EPRDF chairman, citing a need for political reforms and national reconciliation. His resignation was officially accepted on March 11, 2018, though he remained as head of a caretaker government until April 2, 2018. He became the first modern Ethiopian leader to step down peacefully, providing an unprecedented example of democratic transition in a country where previous leaders had either died in office or been removed by force.

Before Fame

Before getting involved in national politics, Hailemariam's early career was influenced by Ethiopia's shift from military rule to the democratic system set up in the 1990s. Growing up in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, he saw how ethnic federalism was put into action, aiming to address Ethiopia's many cultural and language groups.

His education, from Addis Ababa University to Azusa Pacific University in California, gave him both local and international insights into governance and development. This mix of local understanding and global experience prepared him for diplomatic and administrative roles within the EPRDF government structure that developed after 1991.
