Biography
Mengistu Haile Mariam was born on May 21, 1937, in the Galla-Sidamo Governorate of Ethiopia. He became one of Africa's most infamous military dictators, leading Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991 through the Marxist-Leninist military group known as the Derg. He started gaining power with the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, which toppled Emperor Haile Selassie and ended the Solomonic dynasty that had ruled Ethiopia since the 13th century.
After the initial coup, Mengistu systematically got rid of his rivals within the Derg through political maneuvering and violence, eventually making himself the clear leader. He was the chairman of the Derg from 1977 to 1987, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Ethiopia from 1984 to 1991, and president of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 1987 to 1991. His rule featured efforts to change Ethiopia's feudal economy with radical Marxist-Leninist policies, including widespread nationalization and land redistribution programs.
Mengistu's grip on power in 1977-1978 is known as the Ethiopian Red Terror, a brutal crackdown on opposition groups and civilians. This violent period started after a failed assassination attempt by the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party in September 1976, leading to a three-way struggle for control between the Derg, the EPRP, and the All-Ethiopia Socialist Movement. The Ethiopian Red Terror Documentation and Research Center estimates the death toll from this time to be between 30,000 and 750,000 people.
During his presidency, Mengistu faced many challenges, including internal rebellions, the Somali invasion during the Ogaden War of 1977-1978, and the Eritrean independence movement led by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front. His government's economic failures, along with ongoing conflicts and repression, eventually led to his fall in 1991 when various rebel groups converged on the capital. Mengistu fled Ethiopia and has lived in exile since then, having received several international honors during his rule, including the Order of José Martí, Order of the White Lion, Order of the October Revolution, and Order of Playa Girón.
Before Fame
Before rising to power, Mengistu Haile Mariam was a military officer in the Ethiopian armed forces during a time when dissatisfaction with Emperor Haile Selassie's rule was growing. In the 1970s, many countries in Africa and the developing world were going through military coups and socialist movements. Ethiopia was struggling with economic issues, drought, and social unrest, setting the stage for revolutionary change.
The Ethiopian Revolution began in 1974 when military officers, students, and workers joined forces against the imperial government. Mengistu became a key figure within the Derg, the group of military officers that took power after Haile Selassie's overthrow. His skill in managing the complex political dynamics within the military junta and eliminating rivals allowed him to eventually take full control of the revolutionary government.
