Biography

Abubaker Kaki Khamis (Arabic: أبو بكر خميس كاكي) was born on 21 June 1989 in Mujlad, Sudan. As a specialist in the 800 meters, he became one of the most gifted middle-distance runners of his generation, putting Sudanese athletics on the map during the late 2000s and early 2010s. He is part of the Messiria, a semi-nomadic Arab group mainly found in the Kordofan region of Sudan.

Kaki gained international attention early, winning gold at the 2007 All-Africa Games at just eighteen. This achievement hinted at his future potential and marked the start of a career characterized by speed and steady performances over two laps of the track. He continued his success with strong showings in indoor competitions, winning the World Indoor Championship title in the 800 meters twice, confirming his status as a top half-miler in global athletics.

He represented Sudan at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, making his Olympic debut. He returned four years later for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, again competing in the 800 meters for Sudan. His Olympic appearances showed his ongoing presence at the highest level of international competition over several years, a rare feat for Sudanese athletes in middle-distance events.

Throughout his career, Kaki was known for his front-running style and his knack for posting fast times by leading from the front. He often set a brisk pace early in races. His performances in the Diamond League and other major international events consistently ranked him among the world's best, and he clocked some of the fastest 800-meter times of his era. His reliable performances during both indoor and outdoor seasons made him a strong contender on the global athletics stage.

Kaki's career brought significant attention to Sudanese athletics and to African runners competing in middle-distance events, traditionally dominated by Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes. His accomplishments highlighted the athletic talent in Sudan and the wider Sahel region.

Before Fame

Abubaker Kaki Khamis grew up in Mujlad, a town in the West Kordofan region of Sudan. As part of the Messiria community, he was raised in an area of Sudan that has faced a lot of political and social challenges. Despite these challenges, he honed his athletic skills and was recognized as a talent in sprinting and middle-distance running during his teenage years.

He quickly rose to international fame. By his late teens, he was already competing in both continental and global events, showing that he had access to structured coaching and competitive opportunities from a young age. Winning a gold medal at the 2007 All-Africa Games, before he was nineteen, confirmed his talent on the African stage and led to a lasting international career.
