Biography

Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, known as Akon, was born on April 16, 1973, in Saint-Louis, Senegal. He is a Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, record producer, businessman, and philanthropist who was one of the most successful R&B artists of the 2000s. After moving to the United States, he went to William L. Dickinson High School and later to Clark Atlanta University before starting his music career.

Akon gained international fame in 2004 with his debut single "Locked Up," featuring Styles P. This hip-hop influenced track came before his first studio album "Trouble" (2004), which was his big commercial success. The album included the R&B ballad "Lonely" in 2005, a global hit that established Akon's unique style of mixing melodic vocals with contemporary urban sounds. He continued his success with his second album "Konvicted" (2006), which reached number two on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

The main singles from "Konvicted" - "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg and "Smack That" featuring Eminem - got Grammy nominations for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and were huge on the charts. These songs simultaneously hit numbers one and two on the Billboard Hot 100. Along with his 2007 singles "Don't Matter" and his guest appearance on Gwen Stefani's "The Sweet Escape," Akon became the first solo artist to hold the top two positions on the Billboard Hot 100 twice. His third album "Freedom" (2008) continued his success with the top ten single "Right Now (Na Na Na)" and other charting tracks like "I'm So Paid" and "Beautiful."

Outside of performing, Akon is a notable music industry executive and entrepreneur. He started Konvict Muzik in 2004 and KonLive Distribution in 2007, signing and developing artists such as Lady Gaga, T-Pain, R. City, and French Montana. His business efforts go beyond music, focusing on energy projects across Africa. Through initiatives like Akon Lighting Africa, he has worked to bring solar power to rural communities on the continent. His later albums, "El Negreeto" and "Akonda" (both 2019), explored reggaeton and Afrobeats, showing his ongoing interest in global music styles and his African roots.

Before Fame

Akon was born in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and moved to the United States as a child, where his family made New Jersey their home. Raised in a musical family, his father, Mor Thiam, was a well-known jazz percussionist. Growing up, Akon navigated the change from his Senegalese background to American urban life, shaping his musical style with a mix of African rhythms and modern R&B and hip-hop.

After graduating from William L. Dickinson High School and spending some time at Clark Atlanta University, Akon initially found it difficult to break into the music industry. He spent several years refining his sound and making connections in the business before catching the eye of record executives. His big break came when he was discovered by Stephane Moraille, leading to his signing with Universal Music Group and the release of "Locked Up" in 2004.
