Biography
Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez, often called 'A-Rod,' was born on July 27, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York. As a former Major League Baseball player, he gained national attention for his outstanding athletic talent during his time at Westminster Christian School in Miami, Florida. The Seattle Mariners picked Rodriguez first in the 1993 MLB draft, and he debuted the next year at just 18, showing promise as a young talent.
Rodriguez played for the Mariners from 1994 to 2000, becoming a full-time starter in 1996. That year, he won the American League batting title and was runner-up in AL MVP voting. Known for his powerful hitting, speed, and skill at shortstop, he was considered one of the best players of his time. After the 2000 season, he signed a 10-year, $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers, the biggest in baseball at that time. He earned his first AL MVP Award in 2003 and was named Player of the Year in 2002, even though the Rangers struggled as a team.
In 2004, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees and moved from shortstop to third baseman to fit the team with Derek Jeter. With the Yankees, he won two more AL MVP Awards and became a key player. Over 22 seasons, Rodriguez hit 696 home runs, had over 2,000 RBIs, scored more than 2,000 runs, collected over 3,000 hits, and stole more than 300 bases, the only MLB player to reach all five accomplishments. He was an All-Star 14 times and won two Gold Glove Awards and ten Silver Slugger Awards.
Rodriguez's career had its controversies. In 2009, he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs from 2001 to 2003 with the Rangers. In 2013, he was suspended for the 2014 season and the 2015 postseason due to the Biogenesis scandal, where he violated the league's drug policy. He retired from baseball in August 2016. Despite issues, his stats are some of the most impressive in the sport's history.
After retiring, Rodriguez moved into business and broadcasting. He became a baseball analyst and TV commentator. He leads A-Rod Corp and chairs Presidente beer. He also co-owns the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves with Marc Lore.
Before Fame
Alexander Rodriguez was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up mainly in Miami, Florida, after his family moved there when he was young. He attended Westminster Christian School in Miami, where he became one of the most recruited athletes in the country, excelling in both baseball and football. His physical abilities, understanding of baseball, and work ethic set him apart from others at a young age.
By the time Rodriguez was a high school senior, he was considered the top amateur baseball prospect in the nation. The Seattle Mariners chose him as the first overall pick in the 1993 MLB draft, and he skipped college. He spent a short time in the minor leagues before making his major league debut in 1994, paving the way for one of the most statistically productive careers in professional baseball history.
