Biography

Ali Akbar Khan (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009) was a master of Hindustani classical music and one of the greatest sarod players ever. Born in Brahmanbaria, he came from the renowned Maihar gharana and learned music from his father, the legendary musician Allauddin Khan. With his father's tough training, Khan developed amazing skills and a deep understanding of classical Indian music, which later made him a leading figure in this field.

Khan's career changed in 1955 when he first traveled to America, invited by famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin. This trip marked the start of his efforts to introduce Indian classical music to Western audiences. He eventually settled in California, playing a key role in connecting Eastern and Western musical traditions. His performances and teaching drew wide attention and helped grow appreciation for Indian classical music worldwide.

As a teacher, Khan made significant impacts on music education. He set up a music school in Calcutta in 1956 and later founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967. This college moved with him to the United States and is now in San Rafael, California, with a branch in Basel, Switzerland. He also worked as an adjunct music professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, sharing his knowledge with students from various backgrounds.

Khan's artistic excellence earned him many top honors during his career. He received India's Padma Bhushan in 1967 and the higher Padma Vibhushan in 1989, along with the MacArthur Fellowship in 1991. He was nominated five times for Grammy Awards and got the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship. Besides performing and teaching, Khan composed many classical ragas and film scores, showing his range as a musician and composer. He passed away in San Francisco in 2009, leaving a deep musical legacy.

Before Fame

Ali Akbar Khan was born into a musical family in Brahmanbaria, where his father Allauddin Khan was one of the most respected musicians of the Maihar gharana. From a young age, he was deeply involved in classical training under his father's strict guidance, which involved long hours of practice and discipline. This intense musical education set the stage for his later expertise in the sarod and deep understanding of Hindustani classical music.

In the mid-20th century, Indian classical music was mainly limited to the Indian subcontinent, with little exposure to Western audiences. Khan emerged when cultural exchange between East and West was beginning to grow, and his exceptional talent helped him become one of the first Indian classical musicians to successfully introduce this ancient art form to international audiences.
