Biography

Andrius Kubilius, born December 8, 1956, in Vilnius, is a Lithuanian physicist and politician known for his significant roles in Lithuanian government and the European Union. He studied at Vilnius University before moving from science to politics, becoming a leading figure in Lithuania during the post-independence period. Kubilius started his political career during Lithuania's fight for independence from the Soviet Union and became a key player in the reform movement.

Kubilius served as Prime Minister of Lithuania twice. His first term was from 1999 to 2000, during which he led a center-right government focused on modernizing the economy and improving international ties. He was Prime Minister again from 2008 to 2012, steering Lithuania through the global financial crisis and pushing for closer ties with Europe. Throughout his terms, he promoted free-market reforms and supported pro-Western foreign policies.

He led the conservative Homeland Union party from 2003 to 2015, shaping Lithuania's center-right politics for many years. Under his leadership, the party became a major influence, consistently promoting conservative economic policies and strong ties with Europe and the United States. The party played a crucial role in Lithuania joining NATO and the European Union.

After leading the party, Kubilius continued his political work at the European level as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2024. His focus was on defense and security issues, highlighting Lithuania's position as a frontline state against Russian influence. In 2024, he was appointed as the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, working to boost the EU's defense and space capabilities amid rising global tensions.

Throughout his career, Kubilius has received many international awards for his contributions to European integration and international relations. These honors include the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 2009, the Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, and the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, among others. These recognitions show his role in enhancing Lithuania's international ties and his impact on European politics.

Before Fame

Kubilius grew up in Soviet-occupied Lithuania at a time when the country was trying to keep its cultural identity under communist rule. He studied physics at Vilnius University, gaining analytical skills that would later help him in politics, even though his early career seemed set for academia or scientific research.

The late 1980s and early 1990s were a significant time in Lithuanian history, as the country fought for independence from the Soviet Union. Like many intellectuals of his generation, Kubilius got involved in the independence movement, where his organizational skills and clear thinking made him a natural leader. This political turmoil laid the foundation for his political career, as he helped guide Lithuania's shift from a Soviet-controlled state to an independent European democracy.
