Biography

Barisone II was the Judge of Arborea, one of the four separate kingdoms of medieval Sardinia, ruling from 1146 to 1186. Born in Oristano around 1150, he was the son of Comita II and Elena de Orrubu. His forty-year reign changed Sardinian politics, with his efforts in territorial expansion, forming foreign alliances, and his first attempt to bring the entire island under one ruler.

During the early years of his rule, Barisone worked closely with Pisa and maintained peaceful relations with the Church. He took part in religious events, including the consecration of Santa Maria di Bonarcado with Villano, Archbishop of Pisa, and donated land to the Church. This period of calm allowed him to strengthen his control over his own kingdom before pursuing bigger goals.

In 1157, Barisone made a decision that altered Sardinian politics. He ended his marriage with his first wife, Pellegrina de Lacon, from an old Sardinian noble family, and married Agalbursa de Cervera, daughter of Ponce and sister of Raymond Berengar IV, Count of Barcelona. This marriage brought Catalan influence to Sardinia and gave Barisone strong foreign support for his land ambitions. This alliance benefited both sides, as Barisone aided Barcelona in their military campaigns against the Almoravids in the Balearic Islands while receiving help for his plans to unify the Sardinian kingdoms.

Barisone's boldest accomplishment came in 1164 when he gained recognition from the Holy Roman Emperor as King of Sardinia, becoming the first leader to receive imperial backing over the entire island. However, his efforts toward real unification faced strong opposition. His invasion of the Judicate of Cagliari, which he claimed through his lineage from Constantine II, initially managed to drive Judge Peter into exile. Yet by spring 1164, a coalition of the Judicates of Torres and Cagliari, with Pisan forces' support, countered by taking back Cagliari and invading Arborea, forcing Barisone to retreat to his strongholds.

Before Fame

Barisone was born into Arborea's ruling family when Sardinia was split into four independent kingdoms, each running its own affairs. As the son of Judge Comita II, he probably learned about governance and military tactics from an early age. Sardinia's strategic spot in the Mediterranean made it a target for major sea powers like Pisa and Genoa, who wanted its ports and resources.

Before officially taking over after Comita II's death in 1146, he might have worked with his father's administration. In 12th-century Sardinia, rulers had to juggle connections with mainland Italian powers, the Church, and local noble families while keeping the independence that had been a part of the kingdoms since the 9th century.
