Biography
Bjarni Benediktsson was born on January 26, 1970, in Reykjavík, Iceland. He studied law at the University of Iceland and then at the University of Miami. He is married to Þóra Margrét Baldvinsdóttir. Known as Bjarni Ben, he worked as a lawyer before moving into politics, eventually becoming the Prime Minister of Iceland.
Bjarni became the leader of the Independence Party in 2009, a center-right party with deep roots in Iceland's political life. Under his leadership, the party weathered the aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse that severely hit Iceland’s economy. From 2013 to 2017, he served as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, overseeing economic recovery and growth, which helped improve Iceland's international financial standing after the crisis.
He first became Prime Minister of Iceland from January to November 2017, but his term was cut short by political controversy. Despite resigning from that position, Bjarni continued to hold significant sway, serving as Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir in a coalition government. He stayed in that role until October 2023, when he resigned and briefly took on the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2023 to 2024.
On April 9, 2024, Bjarni became Prime Minister again, holding the position until December 2024. Throughout his career, he gained a reputation as a 'teflon' politician, highlighting his ability to stay a key figure in Icelandic politics despite scandals and controversies that might have ended other careers. He stepped down as leader of the Independence Party in 2025, ending over fifteen years leading one of Iceland's most significant political parties.
Before Fame
Bjarni Benediktsson grew up in Reykjavík when Iceland was a small but prosperous Nordic nation, closely aligned with Western countries and steadily growing its economy. He studied law at the University of Iceland and later at the University of Miami, which gave him a unique international viewpoint among Icelandic politicians of his time.
His legal background helped him step into politics. He climbed the ranks of the Independence Party during the 2000s, a decade first marked by a significant economic boom and then by a severe financial crisis in 2008. After this crisis, when Iceland was dealing with major economic and social challenges, Bjarni became the leader of the Independence Party in 2009 and started working on regaining political strength for himself and his party.
