Biography

Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson was born on June 26, 1968, in Reykjavík, Iceland. He studied at various institutions including the University of Iceland, University of Oxford, Queen Mary University of London, University of Warwick, St Antony's College, University of Bonn, and Reykjavík University. This diverse educational background influenced his approach to Icelandic history and politics.

Guðni became a specialist in modern Icelandic history and worked as a professor at the University of Iceland. His research covered major events in Iceland's recent history, such as the Cod Wars, the 2008-2011 financial crisis, and the evolution of the Icelandic presidency. He wrote several books on Icelandic and American history, earning a reputation as a respected scholar. Besides his academic work, he also worked as a translator and held leadership roles in professional organizations, such as serving as president of Sögufélag, the Icelandic historical society, from 2011 to 2015.

In May 2016, Guðni announced he would run for President of Iceland as an independent. He won the election with a plurality of votes, becoming the youngest person to take on the role at 47. Starting his presidency in 2016, he enjoyed consistently high approval ratings, higher than any previous Icelandic president. He was re-elected in 2020 with a large majority, showing ongoing public support throughout his presidency.

During his eight years as president, Guðni continued to be interested in scholarly work while handling ceremonial and constitutional responsibilities. His academic background contributed to how he dealt with political challenges. He received international honors like the Knight of the Order of the Elephant from Denmark in 2017, the Royal Order of the Seraphim from Sweden in 2018, and the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 2017. Guðni decided not to run for a third term and concluded his presidency in 2024, returning to civilian life after two full terms.

Before Fame

Guðni grew up as Iceland transitioned from mainly rural to a modern Nordic welfare state. During his early years, Iceland became more engaged with international institutions and grew more confident as an independent nation. The country faced questions of identity, sovereignty, and its role in the global community in the late 20th century, themes that later influenced his historical research.

He rose to prominence through academic success and studying abroad. His extensive education in European and British institutions showed Iceland's intellectual ties with the Atlantic world. His focus on modern Icelandic history allowed him to analyze the country's recent past with an insider's knowledge and an international viewpoint, eventually establishing him as a public intellectual before entering politics.
