Biography

Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes was born on 8 September 1994 in Maia, Portugal. He is a professional footballer, playing as an attacking midfielder for Manchester United in the Premier League, and he is also the captain of the Portugal national team. Many consider Fernandes one of the best midfielders in the world, known for his creativity, vision, goal-scoring ability, and range of passing.

Fernandes started his professional career in Italy with Serie B team Novara, then moved to Serie A club Udinese in 2013. He joined Sampdoria three years later and spent five years honing his skills in Italian football. In 2017, he moved closer to home by signing with Sporting CP in Portugal. His stint at Sporting was transformative; he won two Taças da Liga in 2018 and 2019, the Taça de Portugal, and was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both seasons. During the 2018–19 season, he scored 33 goals in all competitions, setting a record as the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder and the highest-scoring midfielder in Europe for a single season.

In January 2020, Manchester United signed Fernandes for €55 million (£47 million), making it the second-highest fee paid for a Portuguese player leaving the domestic league at the time. His impact at Old Trafford was immediate and significant. He became a key player in the club's midfield, making over 300 appearances for United. His club honors include the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. He also played a crucial role in United reaching the UEFA Europa League final in both 2021 and 2025, finishing as the competition's top scorer in those seasons, and in the club's run to the FA Cup final in 2023.

The 2025–26 season brought him individual recognition along with his team contributions. Fernandes was named both the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season. He also won the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award after providing 21 assists, setting a new record for most assists in a single Premier League season. Leading both Manchester United and the Portugal national team, he has earned the trust of managers and teammates in both his playing and leadership abilities.

Before Fame

Bruno Fernandes grew up in Maia, a municipality in the Porto area of northern Portugal, where football is a big part of life. He was part of a time when Portuguese football was producing skilled players who could compete at top European clubs. Fernandes played for Portugal in the under-19, under-20, under-21, and under-23 teams and participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics, gaining international experience before making his mark at the senior level.

His rise to fame was steady rather than sudden. He left Portugal as a teenager to join Novara in Italy's second division, eventually moving up to Serie A with Udinese and then Sampdoria. His time in Italian football, known for its tactical discipline and defensive focus, helped him develop the ability to find space and create chances against organized opponents.
